At least six members of a Spanish intelligence team were killed today in an attack on their convoy south of Baghdad.

Spanish officials said in Madrid an eight-strong team had been attacked and six had been killed, one was injured while another was unaccounted for.

A spokesman said three vehicles carrying the team from Spain's National Intelligence Centre were attacked in Suwayrah.

A coalition helicopter that reached the scene of the attack 30 miles south of the capital took the bodies and the wounded person to a medical centre.

There were reports of two burning vehicles, the spokesman said, also noting that three helicopters of the Plus Ultra Brigade, one carrying medical equipment, were already in the area to evacuate any survivors.
