At least 20 pro-Russian Chechen policemen were killed when an explosion ripped through a police station in Grozny, the capital of the breakaway Russian republic of Chechnya tonight, ITAR-TASS news agency said, quoting local police officials.

Chechnya's pro-Russian deputy Prime minister, Mr Bislan Gantamirov, said the blast was the result of a terrorist attack carried out by radical Islamist militants, ITAR-TASS reported.

Russian troops poured into Chechnya three years ago to put down a separatist insurgency, in what the Kremlin describes as "anti-terrorist operation."
