The nurse convicted of poisoning and assault offences over her treatment of two patients at Naas General Hospital has been struck off the Register of Nurses.

The removal of Noreen Mulholland (35) from the professional register was approved by the High Court after a request from An Bord Altranais, the regulatory authority for nurses in Ireland.

It was the final proceeding in five years of legal action against Ms Mulholland over her "brutal and rough" treatment of two elderly patients.

Ms Mulholland was given a four-year suspended sentence last year over her treatment in 2003 of Co Wicklow man John Gethings (77) and Naas man Seamus Doherty (80).

Both men have since died, but it was never alleged Ms Mulholland was responsible for their deaths.

Gardaí began investigating Ms Mulholland in 2003 after complaints from her colleagues.

Her trial heard that Mr Gethings had been injected "very brutally and very roughly" with a powerful sedative even though it had only been prescribed for him in tablet form. She had treated Mr Doherty in a similar manner.

Ms Mulholland had also used a large-gauge needle, which would have been painful for the patients.

Ms Mulholland was charged with recklessly administering a substance to two patients which she knew to be capable of interfering with their bodily functions.

During her trial, it emerged that Ms Mulholland had been placed at the hospital by a nursing agency despite being dismissed from the Blackrock Clinic a few months earlier.

Ms Mulholland, who now lives in Portadown, Co Armagh, was given a four-year suspended sentence. Judge Frank O'Donnell told her: "You will never nurse again nor should you."

Yesterday, An Bord Altranais confirmed Ms Mulholland had been struck off their register.
