Asbestos fears may delay Lansdowne project

The planned €250 million redevelopment of the Lansdowne Road stadium in Dublin may delayed for up to two years after an amount of hazardous asbestos was found at the site, it emerged today.

A report in today's Sunday Tribune says the Irish Rugby Football Union  (IRFU) and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) could face four years without the traditional home venue for international matches.

The report says a significant quantity of asbestos cement sheeting contained in the roofing of the old section of the stadium  will have to be removed by specialist contractors.

The authorities are planning to demolish the existing structure and construct a 55,000-seater stadium.
