More than 500 children from primary schools in Carlow participated in a science art and essay competition organised by the Institute of Technology, Carlow.

The themes were "Science in my life" and "Science in the new millennium", and the 22 prizes were awarded last night. Category A essay winners included Laura Daly (1st), Emer Neenan (2nd), Emmet Jordan (3rd) and Aoife Kelly and Chelsey Timmons (both highly commended). Category B essay winners were Joseph Kelly (1st), Elaine Shore (2nd), Helen Fogarty (3rd) and Laura Scriven and Philip Mullins (both highly commended). Category A art competition winners were David Gillespie (1st), Sarah Devereux (2nd), Donal Carbery (3rd) and Laura Purcell and Jeffery Abbot (both highly commended0. Category B winners were Jeff Walsh (1st), David Fennell (2nd), Chloe Brennan (3rd) and Conor Behan and Damien Mulhall (both highly commended). Two special art award winners were Timothy Johnston and Niall Prendergast.
