A Croatian court today issued arrest warrants for retired general Mr Mirko Norac and war-time deputy Mr Milan Canic on suspicion of war crimes against ethnic Serb civilians, the HINA news agency reported.

Mr Norac and Mr Canic are suspected of war crimes in the region of the central Croatian town of Gospic at the outbreak of the 1991-95 Serbo-Croatian war.

The warrants were issued by investigative judge Sajonara Culina at Rijeka county court at the request of a deputy state attorney, HINA said.

The arrest warrants followed a request to Mr Culina to expand an ongoing probe of six war crimes suspects to include Mr Norac and Mr Canic, the national radio reported.
