Eleven suspected Islamic militants and six Indian soldiers died in a clash today in southern Kashmir's Doda district, a police spokesman said.

Indian troops came under heavy fire during a search in the Barat Nala area of Doda, about 117 miles southeast of Indian Kashmir's winter capital Jammu, the spokesman said.

The operation was launched early today after a tip-off, he added.

The gun battle lasted for three hours, after which the soldiers found the bodies of 11 militants.

Four Indian soldiers who had been wounded died on their way to hospital.
