Aston Villa pulled off a shock 2-1 victory over Chelsea tonight to reach the semi-finals of the League Cup.

In the other quarter-final Tottenham Hotspur were ousted by Middlesbrough after a penalty shoot-out that ended 5-4.  Michael Ricketts kept Middlesbrough in the tie with an equaliser four minutes from time after Darren Anderton's second minute opener.

A fantastic goal by Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel gave Villa a 16th minute lead, Chelsea's England playmaker Joe Cole levelled in the 69th minute but Gavin McCann lashed home the winner nine minutes later after an Angel shot had been blocked.

The result defied the form book, with Villa lying just a point above the relegation zone and third-placed Chelsea challenging for premier league and Champions League honours.
