A US native with Connemara links and a Mayo manufacturing engineering graduate have been ordained to the Catholic priesthood by the Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary.

The double ordination took place yesterday in the Tuam archdiocese, which comprises about 120,000 parishioners in total, spanning Galway and Mayo.

Eugene O’Boyle (29), of Claremorris, Co Mayo, opted for the priesthood in August 2006 after completing a degree in manufacturing engineering in the University of Limerick. His first Mass will take place this evening in Claremorris church.

Fr Shane Sullivan (27) is a US native and arts and philosophy graduate, who studied for the priesthood in his home diocese from 2004-2007 before transferring to Tuam. Fr Sullivan will say his first Mass, in Irish, in Cill Chiaráin church, Co Galway, this evening.
