Sao Jose dos Campos - Brazil's Amazon rainforest continues to be ravaged at an alarming rate of around 20,000 sq km a year, according to a study prepared by the National Space Research Institute from satellite images.

The study shows 60,257 sq km of rain forest - an area roughly twice the size of Belgium - were slashed, burned and cleared in Brazil between 1995 and 1997.
