Aircraft taking part in US-British patrols over southern Iraq attacked three areas the US military Iraqi say were military communication sites.

The aircraft used precision-guided weapons to strike the targets located near An Nasiriyah, about 170 miles southeast of Baghdad, US Central Command said in a statement.

It claimed the attacks late yesterday were a response to unspecified "hostile acts".

Earlier on Saturday, an Iraqi military spokesman said US and British warplanes had hit civilian targets in southern Iraq in a raid on Friday. But US Central Command said in its statement that Saturday's strikes were the first since Thursday.

The Iraqi spokesman in Baghdad said the aircraft fired at civilian targets during one of a number of sorties over large areas of the south of country on Friday.

He reported no casualties and gave no further details on the bombing.
