PARIS - Algerian security forces have killed more than 150 Muslim guerrillas led by a breakaway commander in recent weeks in north west Algeria, an Algerian newspaper said yesterday.

Algeria's leading French language daily Liberte, quoting security force sources, said the rebel leader, named only as el Akkal, broke ranks with his chief, Mr Kada Benchiha, taking about 200 rebels with him.

"More than 80 per cent of the terrorists led by el Akkal were killed in recent weeks in a combined security forces operation in Tlemcen," Liberte said.
