Students at Alexandra College girls' secondary school in Milltown, Dublin staged a walk-out in protest at the proposed sale of sports grounds for development.
In an organised walk-out, the students left classes early this morning announcing to teachers their intention to protest at the sale of the lands, including hockey pitches. Alexandra College has a long tradition in hockey.
There are over 600 students at the secondary and most walked out onto the pitches to protest. Their teachers remained in class during the protest.
As Alexandra College was making no comment on the protest, it is unclear whether the girls had any supervisionat the protest which ended by lunchtime.
Alexandra College was founded in 1866 to give "a new sense of purpose to the education of young middle-class ladies in Ireland".
The College is under Church of Ireland management and the Archbishop of Dublin acts as Visitor and Chairman of the Council, which is the governing body.
Students of various nationalities and religious traditions attend the College.
The college is on a 30-acre site in Milltown.
