Jean Alesi made an impressive debut for Jordan at Silverstone today as he used a 50-kilometre shakedown test to get used to his new EJ11 car.

The Frenchman moved from Prost after the German Grand Prix to fill the place left by sacked German Heinz-Harald Frentzen, and he was delighted with what he found at the Silverstone-based Formula One team.

"The EJ11 feels very good to drive so I am really looking forward to the Hungarian Grand Prix (on Sunday)," Alesi said.

"I've had a busy and productive day as there was a lot to learn about the car. We mainly concentrated on my seat and driving position to make me feel comfortable."

Team chief Eddie Jordan was equally impressed with his new driver, and now believes the team can move forward with Alesi alongside Italian Jarno Trulli on the grid.

"We want to give Jean a car that can enable him to demonstrate his talent," Jordan said. "We have had some very competitive results this season and I think that Jarno and Jean will be a good pairing to achieve further success.

"Jean has settled into the EJ11 very quickly. He feels comfortable and confident, and he gives 100 percent at all times."

Alesi's manager Mario Miyakawa said earlier yesterday that the Frenchman was negotiating to stay with Jordan next season, adding that he had not yet signed a deal. -Reuters
