The Taoiseach is to be challenged in the Dail tonight to answer questions on his role in the Denis Foley affair.

A Fine Gael private member's motion will attempt to find out from Mr Ahern who told him that Mr Foley was under investigation by the Moriarty tribunal and had an Ansbacher account.

The Fine Gael leader, Mr John Bruton, will also be asking the Taoiseach when he first became aware that Mr Foley might have held offshore accounts.

The private member's motion has been co-sponsored by the Labour Party.

It is understood Mr Foley will resign from the Fianna Fail Parliamentary Party when he has finished giving evidence to the tribunal. He is likely to finish giving evidence today and his resignation of the whip may be announced at the weekly party meeting tomorrow.

The Kerry North TD is understood to have given a commitment to continue supporting the Government from the Independent benches.

Sources said last night Mr Foley would be readmitted to the parliamentary party only after he had settled his affairs with the Revenue Commissioners.
