Both the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and the British Prime Minister Tony Blair this evening repeated their calls for the IRA to commit itself to peace and democracy.

The two leaders were speaking after an hour-long meeting in Downing St under the auspices of the British Irish Ministerial Council to review the workings of the Belfast Agreement.

The Taoiseach said both the British and Irish governments remained "absolutely rock solid in our determination to implement all aspects of the Good Friday Agreement."

He said the key issue was to get "full implementation of the Agreement" and expressed his hope that "sooner rather than later we get to a position that all of the aspects that we require to see from the Republican movement are delivered so it allows us to build up the trust and confidence that has suffered so much over the last six months."

Mr Blair said what was needed was "a changed situation" in Northern Ireland which would allow the peace process to move forward on the basis of an inclusive government. "That depends of course on a complete and total end to violence in all forms," he said.

Mr Blair said he hoped the Northern Ireland institutions could be back up and running "as soon as possible" after a move from the IRA. However, whether that could happen "depends critically on the credibility of what is done", he said.

"Obviously I want to see the executive back up and running again as soon as possible but it does depend, and I hope people realise this, critically on the credibility on what is done."  Mr Ahern added: "The issue for months now has been trust and confidence and building that back up again."

Mr Blair acknowledged differences over the Common Agricultural Policy and said that both leaders were simply trying to protect their national interests. Mr Ahern added: "There is just a few billion between us but we will sort that out."
