Aer Lingus has today terminated the contract of chief executive, Mr Michael Foley.

Mr Foley had been under investigation for the alleged sexual harassment of two female colleagues.

A statement from the committee investigating the allegations said: "The Committee, having concluded that Mr Foley’s position as Chief Executive is untenable, has decided to terminate his employment with immediate effect in accordance with his contract."

The statement said Mr Bernie Cahill would continue in his role as acting chief executive until a permanent replacement for Mr Foley is appointed.

Mr Foley said he was shocked and disturbed by Aer Lingus’ decision and reiterated his innocence of the allegations.

"I will not relent in my efforts to ensure that the truth around the allegations against me will ultimately prevail," he said in a statement released today.

He has always protested innocence against the complaints by two female staff members.
