Along with American Music Club, Red House Painters carried the torch for low-key, low wattage, lo-fi miserablists in the early 1990s. Aiming to please through a morose selection of albums, Red House Painters singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek left the band in the mid-1990s, leaving behind him a litany of record company wrangles and some of the most impossibly evocative and sparse songs you'll probably ever hear.

With a debut solo album now released (Rock'n'Roll Singer; very amusing, I'm sure) and a co-starring role in the new Cameron Crowe movie, Stillwater, it would seem that the former Red House Painter has finally discarded his criminally shy persona. Mark Kozelek plays Dublin's HQ on Monday, September 11.
