A man stopped at an airport on his way to Spain with more than £57,000 in his bag claimed the money was to be used to buy a villa in Spain, a court heard yesterday.

The cash was seized by Customs officers at Dublin Airport from Mr David O'Doherty, Ballymagroarty, Co Derry.

Dublin District Court ordered that the cash should continue to be held by authorities pending investigations into its origin. Judge Mary Collins ordered that the detention order on the cash be extended to June 8th.

Judge Collins also ordered the continued detention of €9,500 seized from Mr Richard Watson, Millbrook Avenue, Kilbarrack, Dublin, on September 12th last year.

Youth jailed for 'manic driving'

A youth who was described as "out of control" has been jailed at Limerick Children's Court for what a judge said was the "worst-ever case of dangerous driving" to come before him.

The 16-year-old was jailed for 18 months after a high-speed car chase in January in which he caused thousands of euro worth of damage.

Judge Tom O'Donnell said it was "through the luck of God" that no one was killed or injured by the "manic driving" of the accused.

Bought stolen €600 bicycle for €20

A youth who bought a bicycle worth €600 on the street for €20 has been convicted of handling stolen goods after its owner spotted him cycling it around the city two months after it was taken.

The Dublin Children's Court heard that the youth (17) denied knowing that the bicycle was stolen when he bought it.

Finding him guilty, Judge William Early ruled that by paying €20 for a €600 bicycle the youth had been extremely reckless and knew that it was stolen. He also convicted him of driving a stolen moped, which the youth had denied.

Judge William Early remanded him on bail until June 9th for a probation and welfare service report.

Convicted of motoring offence

A 16-year-old who was caught driving a car which he had bought for €80 and was also found with a key specially adapted for stealing mopeds, has been remanded on bail until June 9th at Dublin District Court pending a probation and welfare report.

Judge William Early found the youth guilty of driving without a licence or insurance and also of possession of a key which had been filed down so it could fit into a moped's ignition.

Garda Declan Birchall said he spotted the youth reversing the car out of a parking space.

When he saw the Garda car, he pulled back into the space.

However, in court the youth denied moving the car. He said he bought it from a friend for €80, not for driving but rather so he could sit in it and listen to music.

Judge William Early said he did not believe the youth and convicted him. The court was told that the youth, who has three previous convictions, was trying to get on a FÁS course and hoped to get into the car-valet trade.

Judge Early remanded him on bail until June 9th for a report.
