9 RUC officers attacked by crowd

Nine policemen were injured in Lurgan, Co Armagh, shortly after midnight yesterday

Nine policemen were injured in Lurgan, Co Armagh, shortly after midnight yesterday. A fracas started when RUC officers in Edward Street at 1.30 a.m. yesterday stopped a red Ford Escort. A crowd attacked the policemen, one of whom was dragged into the back of the Escort and badly beaten.

The crowd grew to 30 or 40 people and the police drew their batons. They rescued the isolated officer and the situation was defused. Nine policemen were injured and one of them was treated for facial injuries and lacerations.
