Eighty-nine inmates escaped from a Brazilian prison early today after two men scaled the complex's walls, overtook two police guards and set them free.

A spokesman for the military police in the city of Bauru, 217 miles (350 km) northwest of Sao Paulo, said the two men had apparently broken into the prison trying to free two members of their gang. Eighteen inmates had already been recaptured.

"We are reinforcing our troops for the recapture operation," the spokesman said.

Breakouts from Brazil's violent and overcrowded prisons are common. Bauru's prison held 161 inmates but was built for only 80.
