Forty-seven people died in road accidents in September, five more than in the same month last year, according to Garda statistics issued yesterday. The figures also showed slightly fewer people were injured this September, 761 compared to 780 in September 1997.

A total of 334 people died in road-traffic accidents in the nine months to the end of the September, five fewer than during the same period last year. Slightly fewer people were injured in 1998, 7,433 compared to 7,700 last year.

During the October bank holiday weekend five people died and 142 were injured. In the same weekend last year seven people were killed and 132 injured on roads in the Republic.
