Locals have won their battle to have one of the country's most notorious stretches of road made safer. The four-mile section of the main road from Galway to Dublin between the villages of Aughrim and Cappataggle has claimed over 30 lives. As part of their protest, crosses were erected by locals at the locations of the various fatal accidents. They were later taken down when Galway County Council put up warning signs. The National Roads Authority has now agreed to allocate £400,000 towards making the stretch of road safer.
