A joint investigation has been launched by the Irish and Spanish authorities following the seizure yesterday of over three million cigarettes at Dublin Port.

Officers from Revenue's customs section found the cigarettes during searches of containers.

Some €1 million worth of Regal, Sovereign and Super King brand cigarettes were packed in a container in Alicante, Spain, which was described as having "pottery and ornaments". A spokesman for the Revenue Commissioners said the container travelled by ferry from Bilbao to Dublin Port.

No arrests have been made in connection with the seizure.

Gardaí last night said it was unlikely the seizure was linked to any paramilitary organisation, but more detail was likely to emerge as the investigation progressed.
