COMPENSATION totalling almost £3.5 million was paid to gardai in 1994 for injuries suffered in the course of duty. The highest awards were £150,000 and £134,088, which went to gardai who suffered back injuries, anxiety and depression.
The figures are in the latest edition of Health and Safety Review, published today, and were obtained from the Department of Justice. The review also reports that £407,000 was paid in compensation to prison officers in 1995, the highest payment being £60,000.
