More than 200 workers at one of Britain's leading meat processors are expected to be laid off temporarily because of the BSE crisis.

Scotch Premier Meat Ltd is expected to announce the cuts tomorrow at its meat processing plants in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, following crisis talks with its parent company, Aberdeen and Northern Marts Ltd (ANM), today.

ANM, which employs a total of 530 people, is understood to be considering laying off staff temporarily at its two main meat processing plants in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.
