A taxi driver asked to take two men to a docklands area of Dublin was allegedly stabbed in the face and hand by a syringe when his passengers tried to rob him, a court was told yesterday.

Before Dublin District Court were Mr Thomas Coleman (23) and Mr Patrick Skelly (20), both of Croke Villas, Dublin, who are charged with attempted robbery at North Strand on July 11th last.

Garda Gerry Doyle, of Fitzgibbon Street Garda station, told the court it was alleged that both men got into the taxi on O'Connell Street at 11.55 p.m. and asked the driver to take them to East Wall. When they had driven as far as North Strand they allegedly drew a syringe and threatened the driver. They then allegedly stabbed him in the cheek and in one of his hands before running off.

Judge Thomas Fitzpatrick remanded both men until Tuesday.
