Two men appeared at a special court in Armagh RUC Station yesterday in connection with the murder of a former policeman in the city 17 days ago.

Mr Barry Paul Morgan, of Banbrook Hill, Armagh, is charged with murdering Mr Samuel Cyril Stewart (52), who was shot as he and his wife left the Safeway supermarket on March 27th. He is also charged with having a gun and a quantity of ammunition.

Mr Anthony James McElkenny, of Gortin Park, Coalisland Road, Dungannon, was accused of conspiring to murder Mr Stewart.

RUC Det Chief Insp Ken McFarland said he believed he could connect both men with the charges.

The accused, who are pleading not guilty, were remanded in custody to the Maze Magistrates' Court on April 22nd.
