£2.74m approved for midlands community employment projects

The Government has approved funding of £2

The Government has approved funding of £2.74 million for community-based "social economy" employment projects in the midlands.

The Tanaiste, Ms Harney, was at the angling centre in Athleague, Co Roscommon, last week to announce the Government's Social Economy Programme for the area. The programme, which was launched last September, funds projects to aid the social regeneration of communities, particularly projects which provide jobs for the long-term unemployed, those with disabilities and Travellers. The State's budget for the programme this year is £17 million.

Twelve projects in the midlands will benefit from the £2.74 million over three years.

Projects for which funding has been approved in Co Roscommon include £177,000 for the Kilbride Community Resource Centre; £255,000 for the Suck Valley Development Co-operative; £255,000 for the Una Bhan Co-operative Society, Boyle; £255,000 for Tulsk Parish Services, Castlerea; £255,000 for the Crosna Community Co-operative, Boyle; and £255,000 for the Organic Walled Garden, Donamon.

In Co Westmeath, funding approved last week included: £255,000 for the Mullaghmeen Development Group, Castlepollard; £177,000 for the Women's Parish Community Project in Mullingar; £216,000 for the Mullingar Employment Action Group; and £216,000 for Killucan Care Ltd.
