Up to £15 million may have been lost in Northern Ireland through false claims for free prescriptions, according to a report by the Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) published today.

The report found that prescription fraud was the greatest source of abuse in the Northern health service, where more than 95 per cent of patients claimed exemption from prescription charges in 1996-97, when 20 million prescription items were dispensed.
