Irish Times journalists have been nominated 13 times across various categories in the Law Society of Ireland’s annual Justice Media Awards. The shortlist for the 2024 awards was announced on Thursday.
Mary Carolan, the newspaper’s Legal Affairs Correspondent, has been shortlisted three times.
Ms Carolan’s reporting on the aftermath of Jozef Puska’s trial for the murder of Ashling Murphy, as well as a dispatch from the District Court on Inis Mór, scooped nominations in the court reporting category. She is also nominated for a report on the end of the High Court’s wardship system.
Irish Times contributor Hannah McCarthy picked up two nominations in the court reporting and international justice categories. Her reports on the case of Pte Sean Rooney – an Irish soldier killed in December 2022 while serving as a UN peacekeeper in Lebanon – as well as rights violence in the Israel-Hamas war were nominated.

Reporter Jade Wilson was also nominated in the international justice category for her investigation into the EU’s Temporary Protection directive.
In the human rights and social justice category, Northern Editor Freya McClements was nominated for reporting on the Northern Ireland legacy Act.
Sportswriter Malachy Clerkin is recognised for his reporting on the prosecution of two people found guilty of assaulting GAA referee Michael Tarpey.
Consumer affairs correspondent Conor Pope was nominated for his report shining a light on the Small Claims Court.
Videojournalist Enda O’Dowd and Europe Correspondent Naomi O’Leary were nominated in the television and video category for their video report on controversial Dublin landlord Marc Godart.
In the podcasting category, The Irish Times received two nominations. A podcast detailing how landlord Mr Godart built his Irish rental property empire received one of those nominations, with Suzanne Brennan, John Casey, Declan Conlon, Aideen Finnegan, Bernice Harrison, Colm Keena, Olivia Kelly, Naomi O’Leary and Sorcha Pollak recognised for their work on the podcast.
The Women’s Podcast’s special on the recent referendums on family and care in the home, by Róisín Ingle, Suzanne Brennan and JJ Vernon, was also nominated.
Jack White, currently a reporter with The Irish Times, was nominated in the newcomer of the year category for his work with the Irish Examiner.
