Architect and designer Eero Saarinen sought to address “the ugly, confusing, unrestful world” of the underneath of tables and chairs by streamlining their design, resulting in famous creations such as the Tulip table and chairs.
Born in Hvitträsk, Finland, in 1910 (then an autonomous state in the Russian empire) the son of Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, Eero emigrated to the United States as a teenager and became a naturalised citizen in 1940. Among other acclaims for his architectural projects, he gained widespread recognition for a chair he designed with American architect and designer Charles Eames. This Tulip chair – as well as his later Tulip tables, produced by the Knoll furniture company – became a classical example of industrial design, spawning numerous imitations.
One of Saarinen’s Tulip tables, with a marble top and heavy cast aluminium splayed base (€2,000-€4,000), features in deVeres’ Art and Design auction, which finishes on Tuesday, April 28th.

The deVeres auction includes another standout designer chair, the Swan chair (€800-€1,200), made by Danish architect and furniture designer Arne Jacobsen, who was commissioned to design the building, furniture and fittings of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark’s first skyscraper. The Swan chairs were designed for the lobby and lounge of the hotel. Room 606 in the hotel (now part of the Radisson group), has been restored to its original Jacobsen design.

Separately, homeowners renovating large Georgian or Victorian urban or rural properties will be interested to check out the catalogue for Adam’s Country House Collection auction on Monday and Tuesday, April 27th and 28th.
Viewing of the large antique furniture pieces, and mainly 18th- and 19th-century landscape, portrait and still life paintings, goes ahead in Howth Castle in north Dublin on April 25th-27th, 10am-5pm.
The atmospheric interiors of this privately owned historic castle are perfect to display ornately framed paintings, chandeliers and decorative furniture. The fine selection of vintage and antique rugs will also be of interest.

A George III satinwood and marquetry white painted table with decorated drop-leaf sides (€10,000-€15,000), is one of the highlights of the auction. Attributed to the great 18th-century English cabinetmaker turned furniture designer Thomas Chippendale, the table has exquisitely intricate patterns and was purchased by the current owner in Christie’s, New York.
Viewing continues April 25th and 26th, 10am-4pm at the classic and contemporary furniture auction in Mullens, Laurel Park, Bray, Co Wicklow. The auction includes a good selection of vintage rugs, and an excellent range of gilt framed mirrors.
Specialist collectors of military memorabilia will also be interested in Mullen’s Collector’s Cabinet auction, which ends of Monday, April 27th. It has a vast range of model soldier collections from various battles. Many of the battlefield pieces were commissioned by the late Prof Anthony Hourihan, a passionate amateur historian. “Anthony started this magnificent collection – commissioning pieces from craftspeople across France, Russia, Belgium, Uruguay, Argentina and elsewhere around the world,” says Joe Mullen.
Prof Hourihan, who taught business at third-level colleges in the US and Ireland, was renowned for bringing his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of military history to complement learning through business case studies, teasing out leadership and strategy lessons from the battlefield to the boardroom.

Finally, fans of Sex and the City should check out the Julien’s auction And Just Like That, April 30th- May 1st. The Los Angeles auction house will sell the costumes, bags, furniture and set decor of the Sex in the City sequel series, which ended in 2025.
