Writer Sarah Webb is a bit of a weekend-foodie. “I’ve no interest in cooking children’s dinners, but I like cooking for my friends.” Her English husband Ben is from Birmingham, and likes cooking curry. “He has a curry drawer, a little drawer with spices in it that really stinks when you open it.”
“I don’t eat much meat, so I love cheeses. I always have Parmesan, olive oil and eggs in the cupboard. I love really nice smoked salmon, like Union Hall smoked salmon from west Cork and a tiny little smokery there called Woodcock Smokery. When we’re down in west Cork we buy a lot in Fields’ supermarket – crab claws, mussels, prawns and their really good mackerel pate.
“My treat food would be a glass of nice wine, cashew nuts and some cheese. I don’t have a really sweet tooth. I love Gubbeen or a really strong Cheddar. I would eat blue cheeses with sweet things, like Gorgonzola with blackcurrant jam. We’ve a Slovakian au pair and she’s really got us into pickles.”
Her favourite comfort food? “A pack of King cheese and onion crisps. It’s not very sophisticated but it’s what I’d reach for.”
And her favourite breakfast? “Very boring during the week – Oatabix and banana. At the weekend I love an Irish fry up with Clonakilty sausages and fried eggs, the works.”
Sarah Webb appears every second Thursday as Sorted Out Sarah, the resident agony aunt on RTÉ2’s Elev8 at 4.30pm. Her next Amy Green book will be published in May
