Home that inspired poet

Co Cork/€1.5m: Glebe House, a large period property set in around 3.8 acres of grounds near Union Hall, Co Cork dates from the 16th century.

Indicative of the property's charm is the fact that it inspired Jonathan Swift, who wrote the poem Carberie Rupies when he stayed in the house in 1723, shortly after his wife died. The four-bedroom house, which has a separate apartment attached to it, is being sold by agents Charles McCarthy, who are seeking a price in the region of €1.5 million.

Glebe House is reached through a driveway that winds through landscaped grounds. A stone terrace runs in front of the house and there is a sheltered courtyard at the back.

The ground floor has a sittingroom, with pine floors, and a kitchen/dining/livingroom with pine units, beech worktop, elm floor, bay window and solid fuel stove.

The house has views of Glandore Harbour and the fishing and holiday village of Union Hall is a few minutes walk away. This has shops, pubs and restarants.

Glandore Harbour is on the Gulf Stream and is known for its sailing and other water activities. There are also beaches nearby.
