Walter Frederick Osborne, Jack B Yeats paintings for London auctions

Two paintings by the 19th century Rathmines, Dublin-born artist Walter Frederick Osborne feature in Bonhams art auction in London on Tuesday (June 23rd).

The top lot, Joe the Swineherd – is being sold from a private UK collection – and is estimated at £50,000-£70,000 (€70,000-€98,000).

The oil-on-canvas, dated 1890, depicts a scene in the English countryside, where Osborne lived for some time, and shows a young boy tending pigs in a field of stubble.

A second Osborne in the sale titled Boy on a Donkey in Snowy Landscape is estimated at £10,000-£15,000 (€14,000-€21,000).

Osborne (1859-1903) spent much of his working life abroad in the south of England and in Brittany where he painted his most famous work Apple Gathering, Quimperlé – now in the National Gallery of Ireland.

On Friday (June 26th), two paintings by Jack B Yeats will be offered in Christie's sale of Modern British and Irish Art.

The Tops of the Mountains painted circa 1925/26, has an estimate of £20,000-£30,000 (€28,000-€42,000); and, The Light Of Towns painted in 1947, is £40,000-£60,000 (€56,000-€84,000).
