Auctions & Fairs: recent results and upcoming sales

Auction results:

Saturday and Sunday (October 29th and 30th) Damien Matthews Auctioneers auction of the contents of Kilternan Lodge, Co Dublin – former home of the late Don Carroll, chairman of PJ Carroll & Co, the tobacco manufacturers, and a governor of the Bank of Ireland – 80 per cent of the 1,250 lots sold. A pair of Regency Coadestone garden pedestals with urns sold for €5,600 – well above the estimate (€2,500-€3,500). A portrait of Mr Carroll smoking a cigarette by the artist Derek Hill – that had been estimated at €1,000-€1,500 – was withdrawn by the family before the sale.

Monday (November 7th) Mullen's Laurel Park, Woodbrook, Bray, Co Wicklow. Interiors Auction at 11am includes the contents of Somerton House, Castleknock and consignments from other clients. Over 700 lots including antique and modern furniture, light fittings and paintings. Viewing underway. Lot 101, a 19th-century mahogany breakfront bookcase (€4,000-€6,000); Lot 413, a pair of 19th-century Highland Cattle and Sheep Landscapes by Charles Watson (€1,500-€2,000); Lot 475, a Burmantofts [Leeds pottery] jardinière and stand, 1897, commemorating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (€200-€300); Lot 509, a 19th-century rosewood and gilt circular dining-room table (€1,500-€2,500).

Tuesday (November 8th) John Weldon Auctioneers, Cow's Lane, Temple Bar, Dublin 8. Auction of jewellery, silver and gold coins at 2pm with 550 lots, including 105 lots from Kearns Pawnbrokers, on Queen Street, Dublin. Viewing begins Saturday (November 5) at noon. Sample lots include a Sri Lankan sapphire and diamond cluster ring set in 14kt gold (sapphire approximately 17cts and 16 diamonds totalling approximately 3.50cts) with an insurance valuation of €33,000 (€9,000-€12,000).

Oliver Usher Auctioneers, John Street, Kells, Co. Meath. Antiques auction with 600 lots at 5pm to include contents of a Co. Meath parochial house including a 14ft-long early Victorian mahogany dining table (€2,500-€3,500). Taxidermy lots include a Greater Kudu spiral-horned antelope (€1,500-€1,800); and a bull water buffalo (€1,500-€1,800). Viewing from 2pm, Sunday, November 6th.

Thursday (November 10th) Sotheby's, London. Auction of art from the private collection of the late David Bowie including Sleep Sound by Jack B Yeats (£120,000-£180,000); and, a watercolour titled James Joyce by Louis le Brocquy, (£10,000-£15,000).
