Denise O’Connor refurb part 1: Live

Denise O'Connor explains how the goal for her overall house design was to create an enjoyable home the family could cook, eat and entertain in.

All too often the focus of a home refurb is on aesthetics or adding square footage when really the focus and investment should be on what’s not working and what would make the most difference to the enjoyment of the home. For us it was about making an enjoyable space to cook, eat and entertain in.

What was important to me was to lay the space out in such a way that the TV was not the sole focus and there was a strong connection with our lovely garden.

Underfloor heating freed up all the wall space, allowing us to put in lots of storage. In the kitchen we chose drawers over cupboards as it’s much easier to find everything and much easier for the kids to access them too. A hot water tap instead of a kettle minimised clutter and I designed a cupboard to take all of the countertop appliances. It means the countertop is always clutter free.
