Salt and bacon pipped by sorbet

Irish winners in Great Taste awards

Sea salt with dill pollen, made by Irish Atlantic Sea Salt in Beara, West Cork, was judged to be the best Irish speciality food product at the 2014 Great Taste awards in London last night. Michael and Aileen O’Neill launched their naturally made range of salts in 2010, and earlier this year it was among the winners at the Irish Food Writers’ Guild awards.

Hannan Meats in Moira, Co Down, a former winner of the Great Taste supreme championship, triumphed in the best speciality product from Northern Ireland category, with its Moyallon 3 Sweet Bacon Ribs.

Yellow Door Deli, with outlets in Portadown, Belfast and Lisburn, won the best deli and farm shop signature dish for its Strangford prawn, leek and Comber potato soup.

More than 10,000 food products were entered for the awards, which are open to entries from the UK and Ireland, and the supreme championship was awarded to Snowflake Luxury Gelato, a company based in the south-east of England, for its Raspberry Sorbetto.
