Hoya de Cadenas Verdejo 2015 Organic

A pair of inexpensive organic wines from Spain this week. Verdejo is the grape used to make Rueda, one of the best-known Spanish dry white wines. This example doesn't specify any particular region, but the wine is very good value for €10 (on promotion). Crisp and dry with lightly honeyed peach fruits and some grapefruit zest to keep it fresh. Tempranillo is the posh grape variety that forms the backbone of most Rioja. It is also responsible for very fine wine in other regions too, such as Ribera del Duero and Catalunya. Happily, it also makes some great value wines at the other end of the price scale. The vast vineyards of central Spain are largely planted with Tempranillo. The wines are light, elegant and fruity, perfect for drinking on their own or with a wide variety of foods including tomato-based pasta dishes. This is a great example at a fair price: €9.99 on promotion.
