John Wilson: Two French classics from Dunnes Stores, including an absolute steal

Wines for the Weekend: An Alsace Pinot Gris and a Bourgogne Pinot Noir, both at 20% off

Two wines from Dunnes Stores this week. As well as the Pinot Gris below, I would be very tempted by the Domaine de la Ville de Colmar Riesling Grand Cru, a great price at €12.80 (down from €16). If you are planning a posh dinner this weekend you should certainly consider the excellent Les Hauts du Tertre 2018 (€24, down from €30). This is the second wine of Margaux Grand Cru Classé Château du Tertre, and would go perfectly with roast lamb or oven-baked mushroom dishes. If you prefer Burgundy, as well as the Bourgogne below, Dunnes has the Pommard 2018 from Domaine Marguerite Carillon (€36 down from €40), which would go nicely with duck and game dishes.

Dunnes is also offering 20 per cent off a list of well-known champagnes, including a personal favourite, Louis Roederer Brut Premier.

Domaine de la Ville de Colmar Pinot Gris 2018, €11.60 (down from €14.50)
This is a classic Alsace Pinot Gris, with rich and rounded pear and melon fruits, a touch of smoke, and a lovely steely backbone to provide contrast. Drink it solo, with fish and shellfish in creamy sauces, or with lighter chicken dishes. This is an absolute steal at the price.

Domaine Marguerite Carillon Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2018, €13.20 (down from €16.50)
Fragrant and light-bodied, with delicate dark cherry and blackcurrant fruits and good acidity. Ideal with duck, chicken and lighter lamb dishes, or with a plate of charcuterie. You could also try it with a vegetarian root gratin of some sort.
