Tried & Tested: Six moisturisers for oily skin and why you need them

If you avoid moisturiser because you feel the oil slick doesn’t need any more encouragement then think again.

Garnier Moisture Bomb Night Cream €7.33

If you avoid moisturiser because you feel the oil slick doesn’t need any more encouragement then think again. A light overnight moisturiser will hydrate and help to keep water in the skin which will help to prevent it from becoming flaky. I like this one because it’s light with a gel texture that is refreshing. It won’t overload your skin or make it look oily. Another good budget option is Simple Clear Skin Oil Balancing Moisturiser.

The Body Shop Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet €18.95

This confection almost made me wish I had oily skin so I could use it without combining it with other products. The texture is light and almost granular which is quite unusual. It’s refreshing and cooling and will be suitable for day time. Plus it looks as though you could serve it for dessert as an after dinner treat. Did I have a taste? For once I saw sense and didn’t.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Cream Gel €28.50

This is a firm term favourite and one I know men like as much as women. I buy it for my husband all the time. It’s acceptable to him you see because it’s packaged in a blue jar and therefore isn’t considered girly. A gel texture keeps skin comfortable throughout the day and will prevent against dehydration.

Estee Lauder DayWear Advanced Multi Protection Anti-Oxidant Oil Free Creme €54.00

I like this pot of blue gloop very much. However I wouldn’t recommend it for really oily skin as it’s not as light as the others I’ve mentioned. If you have combination to slightly oily skin you’ll get on like a house on fire and with SPF25 and antioxidants it’s good for daytime protection. Foundation also sits well on top of it which is a huge bonus in my book. There’s nothing more frustrating than foundation “balling up” or clumping on top of your expensive moisturiser.

Murad Hydro-Dynamic Quenching Essence €77.95

I really rate this essence product which has a liquidy serum consistency. As my skin is dry I use it to layer; after cleanser and before serum and moisturiser. If you have very oily skin however the fluid texture may be all you need and so you can skip moisturiser altogether. This is a really nice product and although it’s expensive it’s really good. I’ve been using my bottle of it for yonks now and it’s still going strong

Neutrogena Visibly Clear Oil-Free Moisturiser €6.49

When you’re choosing a moisturizer always give the ingredients list a quick scan. The presence of alcohol or alcohol denat within the first three or four ingredients means that the product will actually overdry your skin. To compensate, skin begins to overproduce sebum and becomes even oilier. To break the cycle and keep the water in your skin don’t attempt to “mattify” it with alcohol heavy formulas. This moisturiser is a supermarket buy at a good price point for oily skin that’s prone to breakouts. This cream will moisturise and also work to clear pores. Salicylic Acid dives into pores to unclog and unblock them and can cut down on blackhead and spot formation.
