Trending: Metallics

If you subscribe to the theory that the human race is a bunch of muck-savage animals, either fighting or fornicating, our love for metallics would (tenuously) support that theory. Like animals, we are entranced by reflective surfaces and fabrics that glint in the sun, hoping to attract admirers or blind our enemies (with envy, rather than a magnified shaft of sunlight).

Metallics are pretty, but they are more than that. They seem like the result of a strange kind of alchemy. In our caveman brains, where logic is on an extended sabbatical, we think that fabric is not reflective; hard metals are reflective. Metallics fascinate us on a base level.

Unlike most flashy embellishments such as embroidery and intricate beading, there’s a metallic for every price range. The impact, however, is consistently high. This season’s metallics are silver; the overdone, blinging days of gold have been put out to pasture.
