Colour me autumn

Summer may be on the wane, but that doesn't mean you can't have some bright shades in your autumn layers, writes ROSEMARY MACCABE

AUTUMN IS A time of change – it’s in the leaves, in the school calendar, in the length of the days and the drawing in of the evenings. It is, too, in the bones; as the crisp, chill winds of September usher in a new season, out go the light coverings of summer and in come more substantial items. Historically, the sartorial horizons of autumn have been the most exciting. In layering, in the practicalities of keeping warm against all odds, there is a chance to experiment, to pair silk with rough cotton; to team woollens with denim cut-offs, leftovers from a summer that never quite realised its potential.

This shoot was inspired by the spicy colours of autumn, the possibilities of a chunky wool cardigan or a rough-knit sweater, and the idea that the remnants of summer are not quite ready to be cast away.

The season’s best boot – a delicious chocolate pair by Dune at Debenhams – was teamed with an otherwise quite prim wool dress from Topshop, and a silky blazer in a mannish cut was belted and teamed with contrasting colours for a chic, back-to-school vibe.

And don’t forget the cape the cover-up for this – and last – season. It’s a statement piece in itself, worn over a pair of leather-look leggings from Vero Moda and a chunky, and surprisingly comfortable pair of ankle boots by Buffalo. The aim is to keep warm, but stay cool – something that can be done with ease on the high street this season.
