What is it? Nanami Togarashi, Japanese seven-spice chilli pepper seasoning (€2.95, 15g).
What’s good about it? A true hero product. This blend of ground dried chilli pepper, orange peel, black and white sesame seed, Japanese pepper, ginger and seaweed has a long history in Japanese cuisine. It can be used to add a touch of aromatic heat, as well as a decorative finish, to lots of dishes.
Who makes it? It is made by the Japanese company S&B Foods, which has been around since 1923 and pioneered wasabi in tubes. It also makes the popular Golden Curry mix that comes in solid blocks.

How do I use it? A multipurpose condiment, also known as sichimi, it is often used with noodles, dumplings and sushi rolls. It is an excellent topping for steamed or sticky rice. I dust it on salmon that has been marinated in ginger, light soy and sesame oil, and it is brilliant on skinny chips.

Where can I buy it? You’ll find it in most Asian food stores, and online from Asiamarket.ie, which delivers nationwide and has just introduced same day delivery to Dublin addresses. If you use it a lot, they also sell a 700g packet for €7.05 – brilliant value compared to the tiny (but cute) 15g jar. The plastic stopper can be prised off the jar, so you could buy the big bag and share with friends.
