Sheep, boats, a flea market and African film festival

World Sheep Shearing Championships, Gorey, Co Wexford The 16th Golden Shears World Sheep Shearing and Wool Handling Championships continues until Sunday. Some 300 competitors and 6,600 sheep are taking part in the competition. Up to 30,000 visitors are expected to watch competitors from as far afield as China and New Zealand compete for the coveted Golden Shears title.

Florence Court Country Fair, Fermanagh The annual country fair takes place on Sunday in the grounds of Florence Court, a fine stately pile near Enniskillen. Visitors can get up close with a number of different animals, including a golden eagle. They can also browse craft stalls as well as watching skilled blacksmiths and carpenters at work. nationaltrust.org.uk

Galway African Film Festival

The seventh Galway African Film Festival takes place this weekend. It closes on Sunday (which also happens to be Africa Day) with the Irish première of Andrew Mudge's Forgotten Kingdom, which tells the story of Atang, a young man who leaves Johannesburg to return to Lesotho where he must bury his estranged father. galwayafricanfilmfestival.org

Baltimore Wooden Boat Festival, west Cork

The annual celebration of traditional boats is back. Vessels, sailors, boat builders and visitors will gather this weekend in the west Cork village for a variety of water and land-based events. Dublin Flea Market

With good food, coffee, music and over 60 stalls, it's always a pleasure to spend some time browsing around the Dublin Flea Market. The market takes place on the last Sunday of the month (ie this Sunday) at Newmarket Square in Dublin 8 and usually has a good selection of bric-a-brac and vintage clobber.
