The New Theatre
I Alice I
is an impeccably executed piece of documentary theatre. As such, it is simultaneously contrived and authentic, emotionally manipulative and genuinely affecting, as it recasts “reality” in theatrical form.
Presented by HotForTheatre under the direction of Amy Conroy, the material brings to light the story of an invisible a lesbian couple, Alice Kinsella and Alice Slattery, who are stepping into the spotlight for the first time to publicly acknowledge their love.
On the gregarious Alice Slattery’s list the pros of participating in this unusual theatre project is the fact that “we will be seen”. For the more retiring Alice Kinsella this same agenda is the project’s major con: the sacrifice of the privacy, the intimacy of their love.
To say more about
I Alice I
would be to cheat the audience of the experience of the show, but in the final confessional HotForTheatre make their point with audacious confidence in a gesture that is either its most thrilling coup or its greatest disappointment.
