So it's come to this: Off Topic clip show part two

To celebrate New Years Day, work-shy podcasters Fionn Davenport, Laurence Mackin and Hugh Linehan relax into a second "special" review of highlights from the inaugural year of Off Topic.

One of the biggest stories of 2015 was the trial of Graham Dwyer for the murder of Elaine O'Hara. Fiona Gartland and Kathy Sheridan, who covered the case for The Irish Times, talked with Hugh and Fionn about the shocking details of the case and how the media struggled to report on it in an appropriate way.

Historian Diarmaid Ferriter, no stranger to controversy himself, came on the show to add his voice to criticism of a 1916 commemoration promotional video, the content of which heightened fears that the celebrations would be less than tasteful.

"In a way it was just as well that it came out at that time because it exposed the hollowness of that approach, and it appalled many people. That's why the government had to shift its emphasis," said Ferriter. Soon we'll see exactly what alternative vision for the commemoration we're getting.

Part three recalls Laurence's interview with Jamie Bartlett who wrote a book about the 'Dark Net'. Even since that discussion in September, awareness of this 'Wild West of the Internet' has grown, and even giants like Facebook and Twitter have taken up residence there.

Finally the trio relive the glory of arguably Off Topic's finest moment: an in-depth interview with Van Morrison. Conducted by Fintan O'Toole, the interview reveals much detail of Van's early life and the attitudes he held to the world around him in the 1960s and 1970s when much of his best music was recorded.

Thanks for listening in 2015 and stay tuned for more arts and culture discussion in the New Year.
