Pete Doherty's well-documented drug problems really began to kick in when, badly strung out, he went around to Carl Barat's flat one night last year.

"I was having this big shouting argument with him," says Doherty. "But it turned out I was only arguing with my own reflection. When I realised this, I booted the door down."

Doherty stole many of Barat's belongings that night and sold them to fuel his crack-cocaine addiction. As a result of the theft, in September 2003 he was sentenced to six months in prison.

Out of prison, Doherty began using again. His label and bandmates growing more concerned, he was persuaded to attend the Priory clinic. He left after a week.

Eastenders actress June Brown (Dot Cotton), who is huge fan of the band read of Doherty's problems. Her godson - also a musician - had a similar crack-cocaine problem, but was released from its misery after attending a hardcore rehab centre in Thailand known as Thamkrabok, which claims to have world-beating success rates for curing drug addiction.

June Brown advised Doherty to travel to Thailand, but the musician only stayed at Thamkrabok for a few days before travelling to Bangkok. On his return to Britain, he was immediately arrested for possession of a knife but avoided a custodial sentence. His future remains uncertain.
