Slow Dancer - In A Mood: folky, wide-eyed pop of the finest order
In A Mood
Those Laurel Canyon breezes still resonate far and wide. Melbourne artist Simon Okely has become a specialist in creating dreamy music evocative of a lost time and In A Mood is full of songs which cast the folky, wide-eyed pop of America’s 1970s west coast in new clobber using electronic pulses and R&B textures and stylistics.
A social worker by day, Okely is someone who has listened and paid great attention to how past masters have sculpted and shaped their sounds. It’s evident in the gentle picking which regulates the Nick Drake-like I Would, the breezy, nonchalant twang which powers I Was Often and the Fleetwood Mac-like groove which takes I’m Done Waiting for a waltz around the kitchen.
A record which demonstrates Okely’s skills as a composer and pop classicist.
