In 2011, it was impossible to ignore Battle for Middle You. The tune was the underground house anthem that turned up in the middle of DJ sets at festivals and clubs all year long and was usually greeted like an old pal. The man behind the tune is Bristol-based DJ and producer Matthew Walker, who first popped on the radar as Julio Bashmore with a well-received EP for Claude Von Stroke’s Dirtybird label back in 2009. What went into that EP was a couple of years of electronic explorations, adventures with battered computers and software and some dalliances with the band scene. After his Dirtybird bow, Bashmore released a rake of tunes for labels such as Night Slugs, PTN and Fabric before Battle for Middle You took him to a whole new level last year.
